DO you need tickets to watch the horses races at Saratoga?

Site mentions grandstand admission and club house admission.... and it mentions tickets.... but then it says that there are free seats around (benches, picnic areas etc). SO do you need tickets to watch the races?

For the price of general admission you can walk freely throughout most areas including the lower and upper grandstand and picnic areas. For the price of clubhouse admission (just a couple dollars more), you can also walk through the lower clubhouse. If you are looking for a nice family outing the vast picnic areas are the best bet. You can bring chairs and/or a picnic blanket and watch the races at either the many TVs placed in trees, or you can walk to the rail and watch racing live. What is special about Saratoga is that its the only track in North America where the horses walk to the paddock through the crowd. So you could be standing in the path of multimillion dollar horses and be in awe of their physical presence.

If you would rather have a reserved seat, your best bet on a weekday is to purchase seats at the gate located on Union Ave (first come, first served so be early). If you would like seats on popular days or clubhouse seats on any day, there is just one spot outside the gate on Union Street where the public can sell seats at face value. It's easy to get seats by looking for individuals with tickets in hand (those that are vocally selling tickets will be withdrawn from the premises since hocking tickets is not accepted) Don't be concerned about asking people at the Union Ave gate about the tickets they have for purchase -- selling excess tickets at face value is fine.

Without any argument, Saratoga is the best venue for thoroughbred racing in North America west of Del Mar (California). Most will say, Saratoga is the ultimate in North America
