Lady Bug

Bug that looks like a ladybug, but hostile?

My friend told me that her grandmother was attacked by a swarm of insects that look like ladybugs, but are not. He said they are called "Japanese beetles." Is this true? Is this the real name of this bug? Are they really hostile? We have 3 bugs that look like ladybugs flying around our house, but they do not have spots. I do not want to kill them if they are harmless. Also, I'm not sure if this is in the right category, but it is recommended that YA. Thank you.

Japanese beetles and that ladybug (ladybird beetles) are of the same family of beetles. Japanese beetles are harmless to us, but chewing the leaves of plants. Several times plants are able to regenerate if the damage is temporary. They feel funny if you have one because they have bristled legs. Ladybugs are very beneficial and smooth legs. They eat aphids plants. I would say that someone is just trying to tease you.
