Why do people say about god of the gaps when there are certain gaps that will never be filled.?

I hear some atheist not believe in a god because people used to have gaps for the unknown. Im pretty sure there is a difference between a god gap of thunder and a gap of the whole universe. Why do some people say things like we dont need a god now, we have science now. We know only 4 % of the whole universe and people are already saying things like we know everything now. There is always going to be one gap that will never be filled. All im saying is that there is a differance between trying to explain how thunder is formed, and how the entire universe can be created without a designer

Doesnt that also go the other way around? If you think athiests cant believe in a god because we only have scientific explanations for a fraction of whats out there, then what makes you think you can invent a god just because we dont have those explanations for a lot of things?? I mean, there is a list a thousand miles long that details everything once chalked up to the miracle of god that can now be scientifically explained and understood.
