Skull Face
Posted in Watches on 01/11/2010 11:19 pm by adminWhat does a black Santeria candle with a hooded figure with a skull face and holding a skull represent?
I was geocaching the other day and ended up in a grave yard. One of the grave sites (from the mid 1800s) had 2 half burnt black candles in glass holders. The glass had a hooded figure with a skull for a face holding a skull on one side, and the other side was some Spanish writing. I believe they were Santeria candles from trying to research them. Any idea what they were being used for? Just curious.
I don't think they dated from the mid 1800's, but were put there by someone. It's a blend of West African and Caribbean religions with a bit of Roman Catholicism thrown in. One website says, "BLACK CANDLES: black candles is the most controversial of all. Black candles are used for black magic and strong spells of destruction. Black represents the still of the night, the deep cold and tranquil waters the deepest recesses of the unconscious mind. A burning black candle symbolizes light coming out of the darkness. Working in Palo Mayombe you should light at least one black candle for the spirits twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday. "
SKULL CANDLES: skull candles are used when working Palo Mayombe spirits. These candles are placed near the cauldron of the spirit for communication. Black skull is to communicate with the spirits of darkness and used for spells of destruction. White skull is for communication with the spirits of whiter light and to free and individual who is possessed with an unclean spirit.
