Hoe long should it take for my lawyer to get back in touch with me after I sign my contract to take me case?

He contacted me about two months ago and offered to take my case. And He sent me a contract to sign. I sign the contract and haven't heard a word from him since. Is this how lawyers work? How long should I wait before calling to find out whats going on?

Call him, he is obliged to give you an update about how he is progressing your case.

I am not sure what country you are asking this question from but in the UK your client care agreement (the contract) should set out service standards and set out clearly what the process from progressing your case should be. In the UK the Code of Practice for Solicitors requires that they:

• put your interests first when they represent you;
• are polite and considerate when dealing with you;
• find out from the start what you are hoping to achieve and
try to make sure that your expectations are realistic;
• explain things clearly using words you can understand and using as little
jargon as possible;
• agree the type of service you can expect to receive;
• tell you who will be handling the work;
• explain what the likely costs will be;
• tell you about costs throughout so you can decide whether to continue;
• reply to your letters, phone calls and emails;
• update you on their progress;
• give you a bill which clearly shows the work they have done and how
much they have charged you;
• treat everyone equally; and
• keep your confidential information confidential.

Though what would form a reasonable timeframe for response depends on the nature of the matter I would expect an update with the first month. Particularly if this is the first update after you have signed the agreement. You should never feel dis-empowered by your solicitor/lawyer, you are the client and they owe obligations to you. Don't be afraid to call or ask questions.
