Tom the cat is chasing Jerry the mouse across the surface of a table 1.1 m above the floor. Jerry steps out of the way at the last second, and Tom slides off the edge of the table at a speed of 5.0 m/s. Where will Tom strike the floor?
m from the table
What velocity components will he have just before he hits? (Use a coordinate system in which up is positive.)
x direction________m/s
y direction________m/s
this is a projectile problem
initial position, (x0,y0) = (0, 1.1) m
initial speed, (u0,v0) = (5, 0) m/s
acceleration (0, - 9.8) m/s^2
at all time, u= u0 = 5m/s
using the fomrula
v^2 - v0^2 = 2 a h = 2(-9.8)(-1.1)
v^2 - 0 = 21.56
v = 4.64
ans
(u, v) = (5, -4.64) m/s
x direction____5____m/s
y direction__-4.64___m/s
