What exactly is riding Hunter style? I've heard so many people say they take Hunter lessons and such, but I never fully understood what that exactly was. Could someone please enlighten me? Thankies!!
There are lots of different disciplines that people can choose to ride. Hunt seat is one of them. It was originially developed for hunting purposes. People would saddle their horses in a jumping style saddle (a saddle with a shorter flap, or area where the rider's leg goes than other types of saddles). This way, when they were out hunting and the dogs were on the scent of an animal, they could simply jump over obstables in their way. Today, fewer people actaully take their horses and hounds out hunting. Instead, it has become a show ring discipline. In the show ring, judges want to see a horse with a long, low frame. They should have an even tempo and even stride lengths, regardless of whether or not they are jumping fences. You might hear some people say that they ride jumpers. This is similar to hunters, but in hunters, the jumping courses are generally easier. The fences are typically lower, the turns are not as sharp, and the fences are constructed of more natural materails that you might actually find when on a hunt. In jumpers, it's all about speed and height- how fast can you get around the course and make sure you don't knock anything down. If you go too slow, you can get time faults. If you knock a rail down, it's 4 faults (same as in hunters). Hunt seat riders are looked at paticularly for their equitation, or how well they ride and how correct their position is. They are actually doing a ton to help their horses, but if the rider is good, you won't see almost anything that they do. Horses should not go on auto-pilate. They should know their jobs and be very responsive to the rider. Below are some samples of both hunt seat riders over fences and jumpers.
