Golden compass....?

So, what's the deal with this golden compass movie? I heard it's based on a book about killing God.

It is a trilogy written by an athiest who in the end writes about killing God.
Many people are up in arms about the movie and are boycotting it because of the theme of the books.
The first movie," The Golden Compass", has been filtered down from the way the book is written.
Probably the sequel will be worse.
In the book it tells about how witches are good and God should die.
