Bronze Fire

I have a pair of ugly lamps similar to this -

I would like to paint them a neutral color and give the lamps new life. Would this be a fire hazard? What kind of paint should I use? What is the best way to go about this?
They are Stiffel. Are they really worth something? I paid very little for them at Steinmart.
If its real bronze, why not just polish it?
If it is a Stiffel, don't paint it, you'll run the value.
Maybe over time, but look what it cost before the sale. I wouldn't mess it up.
